Once, we were simply creatures gathered around the fire — listening, watching, making sense of the strange things around us.Then something appeared. A black monolith. Silent. Impossible to explain. A little unsettling. Some stepped closer. Some kept their distance. Some probably pretended they hadn’t noticed it at all. And yet, perhaps this is how every leap begins: not with certainty, but with curiosity.
For translators, every new tool is another monolith on the horizon. And AI may be the strangest one we’ve encountered yet. It doesn’t make the journey unnecessary. It changes the landscape — and, if we are willing to explore it, gives us new ways to cross it.
The old skills still matter: the instinct for meaning, the feel for language, the endless questioning of “but what does it really mean?” Perhaps now they simply have a new companion.
So here’s to us — the curious creatures with dictionaries, CAT tools, caffeine, and an increasingly intelligent machine standing somewhere nearby.
May we keep approaching the unknown.May we keep asking better questions.May we learn to use the monolith without letting it decide where we’re going.
